Nana Utterback & Red Velvet

Nana Utterback & Red Velvet

My Nana Utterback used to make me a Red Velvet Cake in a special pan when I was a kid. It wasn’t until I became an adult and asked for the recipe, I found out she used the Waldorf Astoria’s recipe. Now the icing, the icing was a different recipe than I had ever seen. The piece of paper had a note from my Mom “icing recipe from Aunt Marjorie”.

Icing Recipe from my Great Aunt Marjorie
1 Stick butter
1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. sugar
3T. flour
2/3 c. milk
1 t. vanilla

Directions for Icing
1. Cream together the first three ingredients.
2. Add flour 1 T. at a time
3. Add milk gradually
4. Add vanilla and beat until fluffy
5. You may add a food coloring of your choice at this point.

This is special! This was my favorite cake and I always requested mom make it for my birthday! I am sure I have eaten way too much red dye over the years! I request it still, and my husband either buys one, makes a box, or has a friend make it! It’s never the same as moms and it’s for sure the icing!
I’ve tried to use other recipes and it’s just not the same. My favorite guilty pleasure by far! I’ve got to get back and make it with her icing!

I agree, it’s something about the icing combo 🙂 I guess it’s the sentiment too? My father in law loves this recipe and always requests it 🙂
