Less Control, More Prayer

I don’t know about you, but I tend to get frustrated when people don’t own the steps they need to take in their walk.  It is so obvious to me, why isn’t it to them? I sometimes feel that I have failed them.  Those first few sentences should have jumped out at you.  The issue really is that I need to realize it’s THEIR walk and not mine. I know you are shocked; it isn’t about me!

A friend of mine, Debra spoke about prayer.  Something she heard from the Holy Spirit stood out to me. It was a big neon sign saying “See, Susan this is what you need to hear.” She had commented that a friend of hers was the person to share the Gospel with someone else in her life. You see, Debra thought it was her place to save this person, but clearly heard it wasn’t about her. I immediately related this to several people in my life.

Sometimes we need to realize it isn’t about us, we should be praying for God to place someone in “their” path (whomever the person is).  Today I’ve been reading through 1 & 2 Corinthians and two verses jumped off the page at me.  Then, Debra’s words were running through my mind. The verses are:

“And you are helping us by praying for us.” 2 Corinthians 1:11 NLT

“But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm.” 2 Corinthians 1:24 NLT

Do you see what I see? My role may be to simply help others by praying for them, it is their faith not mine. This was my first revelation.

As I was typing the last verse, God gave me a bonus revelation. He has a sense of humor, doesn’t he? The words “But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you to put your faith into practice.”  I recently told my husband something I know better than to say, especially to your spouse, “You need to…” all regarding how he should be walking with the Lord. I cringe even typing that. I need relinquish control, make it less about me and pray for others more.
