An Immoral or Faithful Woman?

“Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.” Luke 7:38 NLT

One of my resolutions for 2021 is to read through each book of the Bible. I started with the book of Luke and cannot stop thinking about “the Sinful Woman” in chapter seven. You see all we know about her is that she immoral, had committed many sins, was brave and faithful. Jesus flat out said her sins were many! This woman went to the home of a Pharisee, interrupted their dinner with Jesus to express her faith and repentance.  I cannot fathom the courage it took for her to enter the Pharisee’s house.  I mean, she had to know what they all would have thought, she could have expected to be cast out, gossiped about, perhaps worse things. This woman could have come up with a dozen reasons to turn away, even after the Pharisee’s called her a sinner. Yet, she chose to put aside her fears and doubts to wash the Lord’s feet. Y’all, she didn’t just wash them with expensive perfume, she used her tears and wiped His feet with her hair! Her tears of repentance washed the Lamb of God’s feet! She was willing to put aside all excuses to act on her faith, I cannot think of a more humbling act.

This woman has not left my mind in over a week. I kept thinking about the things that have gotten in the way of me spending time, repenting, and communing with Jesus. It is pretty pathetic, my list goes something like this: I need to do the dishes, the laundry, meal prep, or I just need downtime to veg, oh and play games on my phone, binge watch some Netflix with my husband, and mindlessly scroll through social media. This woman was willing to sacrifice so much to have these few minutes with Jesus and I can’t put my phone down.

The immoral woman has convicted me. How I spend my time doesn’t match up to the faith I say I have. She thrust herself into an environment of tension, all to be with Jesus. I don’t know about you, but this woman convicted me.
