So my weight has been like a yo-yo my whole life. I am excellent at researching, reading and pinning recipes; Whole30, Paleo, Keto, Anti-Inflammatory Diet. As if in the pinning of recipes completes the act of being healthy. I have tried some of them, I even know what works for me. BUT, I love food y’all. I love to cook for myself and others.
A couple friends and I have been doing a bible reading plan together called A New You by Nelson Searcy and Jennifer Dykes Henson. We thought it was a great way to refresh our spiritual health with the New Year. Except, it was on physical health. Which was divine intervention…Today’s devotion hit me hard, the past few days I’ve been eating poorly to say the least and in large amounts. A quote from Searcy and Henson really stuck out “Are the foods you put in your mouth doing more to serve your immediate desires or your future dreams and goals?” Hmm. Is the drive thru truly going to help me drop my weight and becoming healthy? I get winded going up 1 flight of stairs y’all? I know I need to be more active, but diet is the biggest part of the battle.
I thought the above quote was my take-a-way, I was wrong. Searcy and Henson chose verses in the Bible that I had probably read and not equated to food. They explained the overindulging in food is a sin. We tend to overlook it because it’s just french fries or nachos right? WRONG. “Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.” (Romans 6:16) Replace sin with food and what happens? I happened to glance above and saw “Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to sinful desires.” (Romans 6:12) I again replaced sin with food.
All of this to say, this is a fresh look on health. Forget that I feel uncomfortable in my own skin. Forget that I don’t look like what society says I should. How about 1. I need to rely on our Father, not food. 2. When I eat a half a bag of chips in one sitting, that is falling slave to sin. 3. I need to be healthy not only for myself, my family, but to live out the life our Heavenly Father has planned for me.
