Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual gifting is a phrase that used to make me cringe. The term seemed “churchy” and I thought it didn’t apply to me. Over time, I learned that the Holy Spirit has equipped each of us with spiritual gifts and I feel these gifts are ever changing throughout the seasons in our lives. If I’m being completely transparent (another church word for honest and I don’t care what y’all think when you hear what I’m fixin’ to say) I’ve been in a weird season. I feel called to “do” more, but I don’t even know what that means? Recently, a friend recommended a study on Spiritual Gifts. The very first verse shared in the book stood out to me. As in, on the 3rd page I read:

“Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.” 1 Peter 4:11 NLT

I’m not saying that I have the gift of speaking, but I am definitely wired to be empathetic and help others. Yet I doubt myself all the stinkin’ time! Go back and read that verse again. Did y’all catch that? We need to do “insert gifting here” with all the strength and energy that God will give us. Not only is He giving us the gift, He is giving us the strength to use it. Perhaps to break out of a comfort zone? When we think, how can I pile more on my plate, He will give us the energy. All we need to do is be obedient, which is an entirely separate blog post. When we put this divine gift to use, EVERYTHING we do will bring Glory to God.

I don’t know if y’all can relate, but I have doubted my ability to use the gifts God gave me. I’ve realized, if I am comfortable, then I am not growing. I have more verses on that too. While I know all of the things above, I need to be reminded of it–ALOT. This is why being in the Word is so important. God has already done the hard work; all we have to do is show up.
